Gerald Ford, the 38th and only unelected president in American history, died yesterday at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif at age 93. The defining moment of Fordโ€™s short time in the White House was pardoning Richard Nixon, from whom he inherited the presidency after Watergate.

He later wrote in his autobiography, โ€œI simply was not convinced that the country wanted to see an ex-president behind bars. We are not a vengeful people; forgiveness is one of the roots of the American tradition. And Nixon, in my opinion, had already suffered enormously.โ€

The pardon hurt his bid for re-election, and he knew it. He was defeated by Jimmy Carter in his bid for reelection. โ€œIt could easily cost me the next election if I run again,โ€ he said. โ€œBut damn it, I don't need the polls to tell me whether I'm right or wrong.โ€ I think few politicians keep that attitude about polls today.

"An outstanding statesman, he wisely chose the path of healing during a deeply divisive time in our nation's history,โ€ said former President Jimmy Carter. โ€œHe frequently rose above politics by emphasizing the need for bipartisanship and seeking common ground on issues critical to our nation.โ€

We might also remember Ford for his personal actions. In 1978, Ford and his children staged an intervention to persuade his wife, Betty, to seek treatment for abuse of medication and alcohol. The successful treatment led to founding the Betty Ford Center.

Undoubtedly, Ford will be recognized as one of the weakest presidents in American history โ€“ not all by his own faults. The Nixon administrationโ€™s abuse of power resulted in weakening presidential authority and empowering Congress, nearly reducing Ford to only symbolic command.

With the creation of the Patriot Act, Homeland Security and their offspring, weโ€™ve tipped the scale back to a dominant president and weak Congress. War is forevermore omnipresent and can no longer be an excuse to skip the checks and balances this nation was founded upon. We should be reminded that, like Nixon, empowered presidents can be unethical and exploit their jurisdiction beyond the interest of the American people they serve. Should a president again overstep his or her authority and compromise American values, I hope that we can once again be restored by someone with the grace and dignity of Gerald Ford.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Last night I went to midnight mass at St. Charles in Tacoma with Sergio. I've always been the butt of jokes when it comes to singing, and as I was taking my best stab at "O Come All Ye Faithful" I realized that the Church is to blame.

I've recently discovered my singing voice and have even been allowed to sing lead on a song and sing back-up on a couple songs with the band. However, I was not sounding so great at church.

I was reverting back to my youth: Being surrounded by a bunch of out of tune white people focusing on singing the right words in time, not really focusing on the key or melody. I never noticed what I actually sounded like because I was always drained out by the volume of the congregation. Plus, I never really cared how I sounded because I was always uninterested in the music. Ally always says she considers converting to the Baptist Church, just for the music. I think God would understand.

Not being a great Catholic, I have only attended church occasionally during the last couple of years, and it's helped my singing. I could actually hear how horrible I sounded, picked up a guitar and figured it out.

So, Pope "Eggs" Benedict, let's tackle this problem. Hire an Elton John or Paul McCartney and let's get some new music penned -- something with a beat, please. It might be a stretch, but the church might be to blame for generations of white people lacking rhythm, too. The classics ("Amazing Grace," "On Eagle's Wings") are great, but often challenging to sing. Let's get some easier songs together with smaller melody ranges. There's a reason why no one can sing "The Star-Spangled Banner." The range is huge.

For God's sake, let's get some music together that's not going to hurt His ears when it comes from untrained voices. It's not my fault I couldn't sing for so long, I blame it on the Church.
